Having been established for around 4 seasons now, Matemwe Retreat has been one of the more popular properties on the island, offering a secluded and luxury option for those wanting a little more than simplicity, but with a price tag that is slightly less than places like the Palms. With a couple more, bringing their number to 4, these are a good choice for those wanting utter seclusion. It is worth noting that they don’t really have a beach as such, but what they have is great.

To the north of Matemwe village and its sister property, Matemwe Bungalows, means that the beach up at Matemwe Retreat is starting to give way to the coral ledge that surrounds the northern rim of the island. This is not to say that there is no beach at all, more that the beach here is a bit “temperamental” and so can be elusive.

The main rooms (of which there are now 4) at Matemwe Retreat are of a very good size and, being set up on the coral ledge, afford great views out to the lagoon and Mnemba Island in the distance. The balcony area and the bedroom are probably the best feature of the Retreats as there is a comfortable and easy feel to them, with a small dining area in the corner to eat. Upstairs is the lounging area and the views are, again, very good. A small plunge pool rounds it off well.
